So begins "Soul of the Heel," the story of an American couple that dreamt of an idyllic life in Italy but found that getting there would require patience (little of which either of them had), perseverance (which they both had in abundance), and money (of which they barely had enough). At age fifty-eight, Scott felt bone-weary of the corporate life he had endured for over half of his years. He took a leap and suggested to his wife, Jessica who was twenty-three years his junior, that they consider leaving their lives behind and move to Italy. Their jobs were wearing them away much like a chisel wears away marble and they had been talking about how the next chapter in their lives would read. Jessica bought the idea of moving to Italy like it was on sale at Barney's. They jumped on a plane to Puglia, a place they had never been, visited thirty-three properties in four days and picked one to be their new home. Like a raft on Class 5 rapids, events moved from there at high speed, sometimes out of control, and frequently encountering obstacles that threatened to dash their dream to splinters. Fortunately for them and their vision, they met Colleen and Francesco.

There are many compelling reasons to read Soul of the Heel, a travel memoir about retiring (somewhat spontaneously) to a small town in Southern Italy. Bergstein’s writing is humorous and engaging, and he strikes a rare balance between being informative and being entertaining.

For the traveler: relatable, laugh-out-loud accounts of how things can go awry when you’re in a foreign country – from washing machines that won't stay put to the decidedly unromantic reality of harvesting your own olives.
For the foodie: drool-worthy descriptions that will have you craving Italian food so hard you might leave a night market in Thailand to hunt down some mediocre pizza. (True, albeit sad, story)
For the retiree: a good amount of practical information on Italy's real estate market and immigration protocol, paired with hilarious accounts of bureaucracy’s shortcomings.
For all of us: a look at what it’s like to leave it all behind to start that new life we’ve always dreamed of ... and the difficult sacrifices and joyful surprises that come with the pursuit of a life well lived.

Bergstein has written a very good, very honest tale of how he went from a penthouse in a big city to a much simpler life in the small town of Puglia. Truly, Soul of the Heel is full of heart and a pleasure to read.

(FYI: Bergstein and his wife Jessica are continuing their adventures in Southeast Asia, which you can follow on their blog worldwideeyed.com.)

Soul of the Heel A funny thing happened on the way to Puglia Scott Bergstein 9781543044140 Books Reviews

My wife and I are visiting Italy for the second time. This time we're visiting places that aren't in many tourist books, including Puglia. I found this wonderful book while looking for other novels related to southern Italy. Probably like the description says, this book is about two Americans following their whim to move to Italy from the rat race they enjoy in the US. The narrative is easy to read (I read the book over 2 evenings, in about 4 hours) and Scott is a great writer.

I've read other books on Italy and like many, have watched movies that deal with Italian Government snafus (and have had personal snafu's with the Italian Government). This book didn't disappoint on that front. If you've seen Under the Tuscan Sun then this (like so many other books about Americans moving overseas to a simpler life like Peter Mayle, an Englishman, to Provence) parallels that type of narrative.

Overall I think this was a great book. I was excited to learn that Scott has a blog and YouTube channel which I will be visiting. Perhaps I'll be knocking on his door in a few months time when I'm in the area! I hope Scott comes out with a book that narrates their adjustment over the years.
If you do one thing before deciding to sell your house and belongings and move to Italy, read this book!!
The Soul of the Heel is the story of one couples quest to quit the rat race in the US and reestablish their lives in bucolic southern Italy. The story is engaging, funny, sad, joyful, and truly entertaining.
Bergstein’s writing style helps you enjoy the journey as if you are experiencing everything with him. This could be a travelogue, or a love story. Or a book about the incredible wines and food of Italy. However you categorize it, it’s worth reading. In fact, the hilarious insights into the Italian bureaucracy alone are worth the price of the book.
This is not a “10 things to do before you move to Italy” book, although as you read the story you could easily come up with a list of 10 things not to do if you decided to relocate. (Hint to prevent a dancing Italian washing machine- remove the transport bracket before using).
I thoroughly enjoyed sharing the journey he chronicled. The honesty in his writing is refreshing- he shares his feelings about his divorce and discusses the challenges of leaving family far behind. He documents the couples triumph of reaching their goal of moving to Puglia, but the roller coast ride they endured along the way is what makes this book so much fun to read. It is insightful, witty and always entertaining.
The author begins his story by noting an old proverb Man plans and God laughs. After reading the book, I can only conclude God is laughing-- a lot.
“Soul of the Heel” is one of the best memoirs I have ever read. With good humor and a knack for suspense, Scott Bergstein takes us step-by-exciting-step through his and his wife Jessica’s labyrinthine project of pulling the plug on their life in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and inventing a new life on an olive farm in the Puglia region of Italy.

If you have ever had a dream that so-called “common sense” tells you is impractical, “Soul of the Heel” is the book for you. If you’ve ever had a dream that your friends and family might consider ridiculous, “Soul of the Heel” is the book for you. If you’ve ever hit what appear to be insurmountable obstacles in achieving your dream, “Soul of the Heel” is the book for you. As Scott guides the reader through the insane, inane tar pit of government bureaucracy, the endless sticker shock of long-distance home renovation, the mixed emotions of saying goodbye to a well-paying profession you’re good at and have held for decades, and the pitfalls and considerable expenses of transporting a beloved pet to the other side of the world, the one realization you will take away from his book is that everything that looks simple is going to be excruciatingly hard … and everything that looks excruciatingly hard is going to be actually ten times harder.

But don’t get me wrong. “Soul of the Heel” isn’t all pain and tribulation. It seems that every setback and jolt the Bergsteins endured could be soothed with the right wine, the right Italian food, and the kindness of strangers who in many cases became close friends.

Regardless of the specifics of your personal dreams, you will find something to inspire you in Scott’s book. “Soul of the Heel” is not a mere memoir, it is a handbook for dreamers. On top of all that, Scott Bergstein writes in an easy, pitch-perfect style. When I finished “Soul of the Heel,” I said to myself, “Bravo! Encore!” I cannot wait to read whatever project Scott and his keyboard tackle next.
